What factors change HVAC cost in San Diego?

HVAC cost in San Diego depends on 6 factors:

System size and tonnage

Tonnage is the cooling capacity of an AC system, where 1 ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour. A larger tonnage raises the equipment price. The size of the home and the insulation set the tonnage; see What Size AC Does a Home Need?

Equipment efficiency (SEER2)

According to U.S. Department of Energy research from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, October 5, 2022, SEER2 is the seasonal energy efficiency ratio measured under the revised test procedure effective January 1, 2023. A higher SEER2 rating means less electrical energy used to cool a home and can raise the equipment price. In the Southwest region, which includes California, split-system central air conditioners installed on or after January 1, 2023 need a SEER2 of at least 14.3 under 45,000 Btu per hour and at least 13.8 at 45,000 Btu per hour or more.

Ductwork condition

Leaking or undersized ducts add cost, because the ducts are repaired or replaced before the new system is connected. Duct cleaning is a separate service; see Duct Cleaning in San Diego.

Home size and age

Older homes without AC need new ductwork or a ductless system, and both raise the installation cost.

Permits and energy code requirements

According to California Energy Commission research from the 2025 Energy Code, effective January 1, 2026, replacing the outdoor unit or the indoor unit of a split system triggers duct sealing and field verification, and kept ducts are tested to no more than 10% total leakage or 7% leakage to outside. According to Contractors State License Board research from the Construction Project Checklist, December 2024, a project that needs a permit requires a licensed contractor. The requirements are explained in What Do California HVAC Rules Require?

Installation access and labor

Attic, crawlspace and multi-story access change the labor hours of an installation.
